In 1984, at the age of sixteen I worked summers at The Adams-Bilt Company. Working included clearing lots, helping with laying out and surveying corner points prior to digging foundation footings for residential houses, checking footing grades and concrete grade pegs, pouring concrete for footing, waterproofing and drainage around house foundations, leveling crawl spaces and/or soil compaction, stone prep for slabs, backfilling foundations and grading, and tying reinforced steel in the footings of residential and commercial buildings. I was the “shovel man” as well as learning to operate the machinery. This was my time of training in all different aspects of work. Areas of training included the operation of dozers, front-end loader, backhoe, vibratory compactor, hand tamps and learning how to read blue prints. This on-the-job training provided the foundation for acquiring working knowledge and experience in the different aspects of construction as well as the work ethic needed to operate in the various areas of construction.
In 1989, my father and I bought the equipment from the Adams-Bilt Company and formed our own company, Tri-Land Services, Inc. We followed the scope of work of clearing and grading lots, building private roads, digging basements, laying out and digging footings for homes and home additions. We also worked with landscapers, homeowners and building contractors.
By 1995 we no longer lay out and dug foundation footings for homes, as work became more specialized. We worked mainly in clearing, building private roads, grading and excavating basements and the hauling of topsoil, gravel and sand.
In 1997 we had over 20 custom builders and 2 track builders (Sunstar Homes and Westminister Homes) we were working with. There were projects located in Chapel Hill (Southern Village, Meadow Mont, Governor’s Club, Governor’s Park, Governor’s Forest), Holly Springs (Sunset Ridge), Wake Forest (The Hermitage, Wakefield), North Raleigh (Bedford Falls), Cary (Carriage Woods, Preston), and Apex (Kelly Glen, Haddon Hall) and many more throughout the triangle.
For the past 10-12 years we continued working throughout the Triangle until 2008. With the changing economy and service markets in 2009, I created S. G. Finch Contracting to serve a broader market to include individual homeowners and the equine community as well as continuing to work with previous clientele.
My ultimate goal is to continue providing top quality services at competitive prices, as well as to build working relationships on every job. I continue to operate right here in Fuquay Varina and throughout the Triangle area of North Carolina. Since S.G. Finch Contracting started, we treat every customer as part of a partnership. Other companies may offer similar services, however our services are the best and come with a personal touch.
